May 2023 features a couple of big games across a variety of platforms. Below, you’ll find the release schedule for all of the currently known May 2023 releases.
And here are my personal picks of the bunch.
Ravenlok is the third game in what the developer Cococucumber refers to as its voxel trilogy, but don’t let that put you off because each one is a standalone adventure. Ravenlok is shaping up to be a beautiful action-adventure game inspired by the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. You play as Lily, a young girl pulled through a magic mirror into a magical kingdom ruled by an evil Queen. This one looks perfect for younger games, or for anyone who wants something light and simple.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is undoubtedly the biggest release of the month and probably the biggest launch of the entire year for Nintendo. A lot of emphases is being put on the new crafting systems that let players fuse various objects to form a variety of weird and wacky creations. Everything that Nintendo has put out so far suggests a bigger, better version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The only question I have is how the ageing Switch will handle the experience.

LEGO 2K Drive might not have the catchiest name, but the early trailers and hands-on previews seem to indicate a very fun racing game. The game features vehicle transformations, drifting, power-ups and plenty of customisation. This could actually end up being one of the dark horses of 2023.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum might be the most interesting release of May simply because I really can’t predict how well it will do. Focusing on the crazed mind of Gollum/Smeagol is a cool concept for a game, and so is the idea of it being a stealth game. However, early previews haven’t been good and the trailers have been…iffy. This one could honestly turn out to be a disaster or kind of awesome. I’d recommend waiting for reviews.
