Hogwarts Legacy has already had an exceptional year, managing to bring in over $1 billion in revenue. Now it’s ending the year by breaking a record: it’s the first game in a decade to dethrone EA Sport’s annual football game in the UK boxed charts.
Here in the UK, EA has managed to take the best-selling boxed game award every year for the last decade thanks to its FIFA games. However, that streak was ruined this year as EA Sports FC 24 didn’t manage to beat out the appeal of The Boy Who Lived. The last time this happened was in 2013 when GTA V took the top spot.
EA were also on the back foot because this was the first time they hadn’t had the FIFA license in over 30 years. That loss will have undoubtedly affected the sales, although 6th place isn’t anything to complain about, and when digital sales are accounted for it will likely still be the best-selling game of the year.
As for Hogwarts Legacy, according to GameIndustry.biz over half of its sales were on PlayStation 5. PS4 was the second best seller, with the Switch coming behind that, leaving Xbox trailing behind.
Despite the huge success of the game, there was some controversy surrounding the fact that Hogwarts Legacy wasn’t even nominated for any category during the 2023 Game Awards, with many people speculating that it was deliberately snubbed owing to author J.K Rowling being a divisive figure. She has made comments that some people deemed transphobic, and some even tried to have the game boycotted, likening anyone who bought it to a transphobe themselves. Evidently, the boycott did not go very well.
Here’s the GFK boxed top ten for the final week of December. Notably, EA’s football title was holding the top spot but plunged down to 6th for the last week of December, whereas Hogwarts Legacy managed to climb up from 3rd to the top spot.
