Update: VGC has corroborated the story via their own sources. Their sources claimed that Nintendo also showcased the impressive Matrix Awakens Unreal 5 tech demo which was also used to show off the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
Original Story: Nintendo’s next console has been a point of discussion for what feels like forever now, but the rumours and reports have slowly been solidifying into a consensus that it will launch sometime next year. Now, a new report has seemingly reinforced this belief.
According to the nice folk over at Eurogamer, the Nintendo Switch 2 (presumably not its actual name) was shown off behind closed doors at Gamescom in Cologne last month.
According to what Eurogamer heard, partners were shown a demo of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on the console to demonstrate its more powerful specs. This does not, however, indicate any plans to port the game over to the new console – it was simply a tech demo.
The new console was previously reported as being lined up for a 2024 release. That would make the Nintendo Switch around 7 years old, which is roughly the length of time for most console generations. Currently the machine sits as the third highest selling console ever, around 25 million units away from taking the top spot which is occupied by the PlayStation 2.
Nintendo are certainly aiming to end 2023 with a bang. They’ve still got the awesome-looking Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG and a new Warioware game coming. Next year’s lineup so far includes a new Princess Peach game and a remaster of Luigi’s Mansion 2. And, of course, Metroid Prime 4 is still lurking in the background, potentially as a launch title for the new console.
